Are plastic contact lenses bad for the planet?
Hi, it’s Dr. Chotiner from Memorial Eye Institute. When I tell people I’m a LASIK surgeon, some of them ask me: “Are plastic contact lenses bad for the planet?”
The short answer is, yes. Contact lenses are not environmentally friendly.
This is because contact lenses and their packaging cannot be recycled through standard channels and are not made of biodegradable materials.
Soft contact lenses are made of plastic, but not the type of plastic used in garbage bags or paper plates, therefore they will never compost.
Thankfully, there are alternatives to contact lenses such as vision correction treatments that can prevent or lower the requirement for non-environmentally friendly contact lenses.
