Can LASIK fix astigmatism?
In this video, Dr. Bennett Chotiner explains if LASIK can fix astigmatism.
Astigmatism means that the shape of the cornea, the part of the eye that we see through, is not a perfect sphere. Instead it is an asymmetrical shape.
For example, if you took a cross-section through a basketball, any cross-section will have the same curve. However, if you took a cross-section through a football, one curve would be different from the other depending on how you took it. That’s basically what astigmatism is. The cornea does not have a perfect spherical shape.
The lasers that we use have the ability to correct astigmatism. The use of ultra precise lasers for eye treatments such as the lasik procedure can make a huge difference to astigmatism patients.
Lasik eye surgery is an effective laser assisted surgery that can help to fix common vision problems, from nearsightedness or farsightedness, helping those wearing glasses and contact lenses to see better.
By fixing the front surface of the eye, lasik can fix astigmatism in-turn, eliminating vision problems.
And in fact, the lasers that we use can correct higher levels of astigmatism than most other lasers, which are in use worldwide.
