FACT! You will NEVER experience painful LASIK eye surgery
Hi, it’s Dr. Chotiner from Memorial Eye Institute. When I tell people I’m a LASIK surgeon, some of them ask me: “Will I experience pain during LASIK eye surgery?”
If you’re concerned about pain, the reality of going through laser treatment is that there is absolutely no pain, both during the procedure and afterwards, and it’s just a matter of lying comfortably on the bed.
I gently talk you through the whole procedure, asking you to look at a light. I put numbing drops in your eye, so you don’t feel a thing.
I use an eyelid holder that gently holds your eyelids, and all I need you to do is to look straight ahead. There’s a green flashing light which I’ll ask you to continue to look at. Most people find this quite easy to do.
Now if you happen to look away or if your eyes move, the ultra-responsive laser either tracks that in real-time, or the laser just stops instantly. Because it knows where you’re looking, the laser will resume the treatment when you again look at the light, continuing as if nothing had happened. It starts again right where it left off. That also applies if you cough or sneeze, which some people worry about.
After LASIK eye treatment, again, there’s no pain. Most patients are very, very relieved and surprised that it was so simple to get through the whole process. Sometimes they’ll even ask me “when will you start?” or “is that all it is?”
In summary, LASIK eye surgery is a pain-free, low-risk surgery with a rapid recovery time and is an extremely accurate way of correcting vision for most people. Please be assured that you’re in expert hands too.
