Is LASIK Eye Surgery Risky For Sportsmen?
Hi, it’s Dr. Chotiner from Memorial Eye Institute. When I tell people I’m a LASIK surgeon, some of them ask me: “Is LASIK Eye Surgery Risky For Sportsmen?”
The answer is, some sports have a higher risk of eye injury than others. For instance, contact sports like football, wrestling, and boxing have a higher risk of sustaining eye injury post-LASIK.
The concern for athletes is that the eye may be damaged while it’s healing. If the eye is hit soon after surgery, there are fears that the corneal flap may be reopened, damaged or become infected.
Similarly, it’s important to be aware of infections i.e. when you’re out in the field, your face is likely to get covered in sweat, dust, mud and grime, all of which are significant irritants post-LASIK. In the heat of play, you may rub your eyes, like you normally do, and this action can hurt the cornea and the corneal flap.
To avoid such challenges, we advise that you refrain from sports activity for a minimum of two weeks post-surgery.
That said, we treat each patient as an individual and so we recommend you attend an initial consultation to discuss any concerns you may have.
