PRK surgery vs LASIK
Hi, it’s Dr. Chotiner from Memorial Eye Institute. When I tell people I’m a LASIK surgeon, many people ask me: “What is the difference between PRK surgery vs LASIK?”
First, let’s talk about PRK Surgery
PRK can help people with short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism and largely offers the same benefits as LASIK. Most people, however, choose PRK because they’re not suitable for LASIK, (due to their cornea being too thin).
PRK is a very safe procedure. You can still continue to work in the emergency services or in the military if you’ve had PRK, whereas you may not be suitable for those occupations after LASIK.
Now, let’s talk about LASIK Surgery
The primary difference between LASIK and PRK is that the thin layer that we replace at the end of the LASIK procedure isn’t there after PRK, so the skin of the cornea has to regrow or regenerate.
That means that LASIK has a quicker recovery time than PRK, as well as providing less discomfort following surgery.
