What is LASIK? How does it work?
IN THIS VIDEO, DR. BENNETT CHOTINER EXPLAINS WHAT LASIK IS AND HOW IT WORKS
The first step in the LASIK procedure involves the use of an infrared laser. Using this laser we make a thin flap (around the thickness of a human hair) in the cornea, the eye’s clear window.
Next, we retract this flap and use a second ultraviolet laser to sculpt tissue under the flap, thereby changing the cornea’s shape.
Finally, we replace and seal the flap within a matter of seconds.
Altering the cornea’s shape corrects farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism. This enables the eye to focus more clearly without the need for contact lenses or glasses.
Most patients can see 20/20 or better within a few hours after their procedure.
